As Indiana coal plants close, environmental justice advocates want decision-makers to hear from communities harmed by decades of coal-related pollution.

As the state’s utilities move toward renewables, recent legislation aims to keep coal in use.

“The market has spoken,” said a Vectron executive in announcing that the 145,000-customer utility will shift its dependency on coal from 78 to 12 percent. "These old dinosaurs are done.”

Bucking regressive opposition, Lake County takes “an important step in a mounting initiative to unlock the potential of solar power in a state that has no renewable energy purchasing mandate.”

In Greene County, Indiana, plans call for repurposing buildings to create craft spirits from grains grown on 22 acres of surrounding agricultural land. Former coal miners will run the operation.
