Iowa, “among the top five energy-consuming states, mainly because of its industry and manufacturing,” is benefitting from its embrace of renewables, which continue to take power- generation market share from coal.

Campaigns orchestrated by “traveling anti-wind grifters funded by nonrenewable energy interests” have enabled the legislator to delay power-generation transition, putting the state at a regional disadvantage that undermines its economy.

The state is “poised to benefit from the wide-ranging economic benefits” of a 2.64-gigawatt offshore wind initiative that would provide 10 times more generation capacity than the biggest coal plants.

“The Powder River Basin is not going to ride a gentle glidepath into oblivion decades from now,” and likely faces a scenario in which “things begin to happen very quickly.”

About 75 workers let go by Perry County Coal have yet to receive final paychecks, and 24 remaining employees haven’t been paid since mid-December. Miners fear precedent has been set.

“By all indications, the pain will continue, with the EIA projecting that coal companies will cut production by an additional 100 million tons this year, to about 600 million tons.”

The Rural Energy for America Program is awarding grants and loan guarantees for “hundreds of projects in all 50 states” in response to a growing appetite for better electrification infrastructure.
