Engaging Diverse Stakeholder perspectives

Environmental Groups

Environmental groups can be local, national, or international organizations that can help communities address legacy environmental issues around a closed plant or mine and protect natural areas, and understand how to best leverage them for conservation, recreation or other purposes.

What They Bring to the Table

  • Connections to community and environmental advocates
  • Ability to apply for funding to conduct research, engage in planning, or undertake projects.
  • Ability to organize their members and convene conversations
  • Relationships with residents or those that have been impacted by the plant or mine while in operation
  • Knowledge of how any impact legislation will have on conservation efforts and the environment

Common Concerns for a Successful Transition

  • Action will not be taken fast enough
  • Future use of the mine or plant site will perpetuate negative environmental impacts
  • Clean-up costs will be shifted to the public
